Nexus Disposal has been serving Greater Houston for nearly 25 years. From Conroe to Pearland, Baytown to Brookshire, they haul commercial waste for shopping centers, restaurants, banks, and construction sites — family-owned and operated from day one.
A Family Business, 25 Years in the Making
Founded in 2002 by Efrain Gonzalez Sr., Nexus has grown steadily into one of the area's most recognized independent haulers. Today, his daughter Beatriz Flores serves as CFO, running the company alongside her four siblings — the second generation to carry the family name in the industry. All five grew up in Houston, attended Cyfair ISD, and are now watching a third generation come up in the same city and the same schools.
The Legacy They Haul
Two people shaped the way Beatriz leads: her late father Efrain and late brother Joel Gonzalez. From Joel, she learned the value of honesty. "He was very direct, and if you had some integrity issues, he would call you out on it." From Efrain, she learned empathy and compassion. He built the business from the ground up and never forgot where he started. "He knows what it is to be poor and live paycheck to paycheck. And he knows what it is to live in the plenty."
Those lessons are woven into the culture Beatriz has helped build at Nexus. "We know everybody by name," she says. "We know all the issues, we know all the fires. We're big on hands-on ownership."
That culture is deeply rooted in loyalty, something she connects to her family's Hispanic heritage. "Once we build that trust and see that integrity in the beginning, it doesn't matter how many times you mess up later. We already trust you. We know there is never ill will or deceit, just a bump in the road. Let it go and keep going."
The People Behind the Pickup
The waste industry asks a lot of its workers. Drivers clock in before sunrise, navigate Houston traffic, and do it all over again the next day. Beatriz doesn't take that lightly. "There's a lot of sacrifice that employees in the waste industry have to make to earn this living," she says. "We're very aware of that. We make sure we're taking care of our people."
Cross-Training is Their Trash Talk
When a customer calls Nexus, they reach a person — not a prompt. That person can handle a billing question, relay a message to a driver, and resolve the issue before the call ends. No transfers, no holds. "People want to talk to humans," Beatriz says. "Nobody wants to be transferred. So we say, 'Of course, I'll handle it, I'll resolve it.' People love that it's one call and it's done."
It works because the team is trained to handle it. Every new hire trains across multiple departments, because at Nexus, no one should ever have to say "I don't know" or "please hold." "We set expectations very early on in the interview phase," Beatriz says. "Once we get that training down and hit it pretty hard, it's seamless from there."
That same responsiveness extends to the field. Without the layers of red tape that slow down larger haulers, Nexus can mobilize quickly when a customer needs them. For the businesses that rely on them, that's the difference between a partner who shows up and a vendor who puts you on hold.
Invested in Every Zip Code They Serve
Nexus's pride in Houston goes well beyond the territory they cover. The Flores family has always been deeply involved in the community, showing up at events like the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Wings Over Houston Air Show, and the Texas Renaissance Festival. "We love to participate in our local events," Beatriz says. "Houston's been good to us, and we want to give back and honor that."
That same sense of responsibility extends to how they operate. Nexus stays current with state and county regulations, including Texas's TERP (Texas Emissions Reduction Plan), and takes time to educate customers on why certain materials — tires, mattresses, and others — require separate handling. "We believe everybody has a duty to take care of our environment," Beatriz says. "We love to be involved in any community, county, or state level program that can help us improve that process, for us operationally and for our customers."
A Banker Who Doesn't Waste Time
Houston is its own ecosystem — the traffic, the regulations, the economy, the pace of growth. For a business like Nexus, having a banker who understands the terrain makes all the difference. "A banker has to understand what industry their customer is in," Beatriz says. "He's got to be able to be in the trenches."
For more than 15 years, that person has been Stellar banker Adam Gonzalez. "I know he's there, I know he's constant," Beatriz says. "If I've got a need, he's already ahead of the game. He doesn't get scared, he stays calm, because he's already set us up for future success."
For the Flores family, it comes down to something instilled in them from the start. "Integrity and trust, it's a really big deal for us. That was instilled into us very young. Adam has that integrity that spills over, and it's one of our core values."
What's Next for Nexus
Nexus has posted 5 to 6% growth every year for nearly 25 years, a trajectory built on consistency, relationships, and showing up. Now they're planning for what comes next. The company is actively searching for 5 to 10 additional acres near their current location. The space will allow them to operate more efficiently and build out a permitted transfer station, giving Nexus full vertical integration across the waste supply chain.
"Once we build that transfer station, we will be everything from raw materials to disposal of the trash internally," Beatriz says. "We'll be independent, solely our own little independent operation."
Nexus has already secured their 24-hour permit, unlocking extended service hours and around-the-clock hauling operations. Now the land search is underway. Once the transfer station is built, Nexus will control every step of the process from the inside. The next 25 years are already in motion.
