FRAUD ALERT: Bank imposter scams are on the rise. Banks will NEVER unexpectedly call customers asking for account numbers, passwords, PINs, or login codes.

Banking on Houston: A Conversation with Bethany Warner

Houston is a city that runs on relationships — and nobody knows that better than the bankers who've built careers here. Bethany Warner has spent years working alongside the business owners shaping growth across Baytown, Crosby, and the greater Houston area.

As Market President of Commercial Banking at Stellar Bank, she's equal parts financial strategist and trusted advisor. We sat down with her to talk about what it really means to bank locally and what it takes to build lasting relationships in Space City.

You’ve built your career at the intersection of service and finance. Tell us about your role at Stellar Bank and what drew you to banking.

I’ve always been drawn to service, and I initially majored in hospitality because I was inspired by the idea of creating meaningful, memorable experiences for people. During an internship at the Houstonian, one of the leaders encouraged me to consider a business major to broaden my opportunities. I took that advice, discovered I had a real knack for finance, and realized that banking allowed me to blend both sides of myself — the analytical and the deeply relational.

As Market President in Houston, you have a front-row seat to industries like energy, healthcare, logistics, and advanced technology. What trends are shaping commercial banking right now?

Houston is seeing a powerful wave of opportunity driven by the expansion of digital infrastructure, especially data centers and advanced technology facilities. These projects are fueling growth across the industrial landscape and opening doors at an unprecedented pace for industrial service companies. With rapid opportunity comes the need for thoughtful, disciplined growth. The companies thriving right now are balancing agility with solid financial hygiene — managing leverage, reinvesting strategically, and protecting the long-term health of the business.

What does it mean to you to support Houston businesses and help the local community thrive?

This community is home for me — it’s where I’ve chosen to build a family and raise my children. Supporting local businesses is more than a job; it’s an investment in the future of the place we live. When a business grows, it impacts families, creates jobs, and strengthens the fabric of the community. Being even a small part of that ripple effect is incredibly meaningful. It’s a privilege to help people turn their vision into something that supports their neighbors and contributes to the vibrancy of this region.

Houston is one of the most dynamic commercial markets in the country. What makes banking here unique?

There’s no denying that Houston is the place to be — it’s one of the most dynamic and opportunity-rich markets in the country. I have the privilege of serving the Baytown and Crosby (North and South) communities, where the diversity of industries is truly remarkable. One moment I’m talking with a grass farming operation, the next I’m working with an industrial services company, a med spa, or a land developer. That level of variety keeps you curious and engaged and pushes you to tailor solutions that actually fit.

“I’m constantly inspired by the resilience and optimism of the business owners I work with. Houston is built on a spirit of possibility — people here believe they can build, rebuild, and reinvent, and they do it with grit and heart.”
–Bethany Warner, Market President, Commercial Banking

You’ve built a long-standing relationship with Jimmy Palma and SMP Supply. What difference does it make when a banker is truly invested in a client’s success?

It makes all the difference. When a banker is fully invested, the relationship becomes a true partnership instead of a transaction. With someone like Jimmy Palma at SMP Supply, I’ve had the honor of supporting him and the SMP team through different stages of growth, challenge, and evolution. That kind of relationship allows you to be proactive rather than reactive — to anticipate needs, think through complexities, and be a steady voice when things get busy or stressful. Trust is the biggest differentiator, and it has to be earned.

What advice would you give business owners searching for the right banking relationship?

Relationships matter. Find a banker who listens, asks thoughtful questions, and shows up consistently — not just when there’s a deal on the table.  Look for someone who communicates openly, who’s willing to challenge your thinking in a constructive way, and who invests the time to build trust. The right banker feels like an extension of your leadership team and someone who is genuinely committed to your success.
